Chippewa County Saferide

Our local saferide program has been functioning again for the last 5 months. To date we have three locations that have purchased vouchers. If we do not step up our efforts with this program it will be terminated on August 1st. This will be an unfortunate turn of events. The State office earmarked $5000 for our program in March. We have not been able to recieve those funds as there is no use locally. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Dewey directly utilizing the information available in the contacts page.

Governor Doyle Signs Saferide Bill

Governor Jim Doyle signed SB465, the SafeRide Bill, into law!

Currently SafeRide programs must raise matching funds in order to receive a grant from the State Department of Transportation.  Currently the state provides a 50-50 match and under the bill signed today, SafeRide programs will have to raise 20% of the money to match the state’s 80%.  This will allow our over 56 SafeRide programs to provide more rides per year.

We will not stop our aggressive fundraising efforts to operate our successful programs, but we will be able to offer more patrons more rides.
Last year the TLW SafeRide Program provided over 50,000 free rides home to patrons.  Tavern League of Wisconsin members provided half of the funding of the nearly $600,000 cost to operate the program in 2008-09.  This important change in reimbursement will allow the TLW Program to increase ridership by 30%.  This increase will help to further reduce alcohol related fatalities on Wisconsin highways.

The Tavern League worked with authors Senator Kathleen Vinehout (D-Alma) and Representative Ann Hraychuck (D-Balsam Lake) to get this important bill passed.
