Chippewa Falls panel takes no action on smoking ban proposal
CHIPPEWA FALLS - The City Council committee again considering a communitywide smoking ban voted Wednesday night to not take action on the matter.  The committee also voted in June to not take action on a ban until the matter is decided by the state Legislature in 2009. "There are such strong arguments in both directions," committee member Jason Anderson said.
Council member Jack Covill said he had spoken with an Eau Claire tavern owner who had seen his property value drop some $400,000. Eau Claire began a workplace smoking ban July 1.  "He was looking to sell and retire," Covill said. "He must get $500,000 for the property and now he doesn't think he'll get more than $100,000."   Said Susan Zukowski, the committee's chairwoman: "I'm not sure we can force that kind of a strain on our businesses. There will be an overall loss at first. It may or may not bounce back later on. I think we're doing more of a disservice by enforcing a ban than by taking no action."
The full council meets at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 7.
